Bio #3:Bluefin Tuna

Happy Thanksgiving! This is my 3rd bio. Fortunately, turkeys aren't endangered, so you don't have to worry about eating it today! Here's a creature that you do have to be careful to not overeat though: The Bluefin Tuna.

Bio #3: The Bluefin Tuna
It might seem iconic, but it's true; Bluefin tunas may well be the most endangered animals in the ocean. These animals can weigh up to 1400 lbs and grow as long as 10 feet! 120 inches! Bluefin tunas have a torpedo shaped, ultra fast and sleek body. Plus, they have beautiful metallic-blue coloring, which also helps their camouflage ability. These fish are strong creatures who won't get eaten without a fight. Unfortunately, many fishers, commercial or otherwise, find this amusing and frequently go on hunts to catch thousands of bluefin tuna. Plus, one of these beautiful fish can sell for $100000! Apparently, they also taste very good.
Now just stop and think for a second. Let's say that bluefin tuna eats jellyfish. I don't think they do, but sea turtles do and they are going extinct. If the bluefin eats jellyfish, but then goes extinct, the jellyfish population will keep on growing till many other fish will die because of it and because of that other things may die, we might have worldwide starvation, and we might be afraid to go into the oceans for fear of giant jellyfish and the like. This is what happens of even one species goes extinct. Do you want to live in a world like this?
And guess what? National Geographic is actually airing a show about supporting fisherman who capture these beautiful wild animals, kill them, and sell them for $20000 each. This is mind-boggling, since NatGeo is supposed to be talking about the beautiful wilderness and how to protect it, etc. It's amazing what some people do just to earn some more money. NatGeo should know better.

Bio #2: Tiger

http://i.istockimg.com/file_thumbview_approve/5506042/2/stock-illustration-5506042-tiger-cartoon.jpg

 Bio #2:
 Tiger

Tigers are amazing creatures, with many different subspecies. The Sumatran tiger is the smallest, and the Siberian tiger is the biggest of all tigers. They are all orange with black stripes, though colors vary according to species. About 50 years ago, there used to be 8 species of tigers. Now there are only 5. 3 have gone extinct.
Tigers are one of the primary consumers in the jungle. They are carnivorous, and their diet varies. The tiger hunts at night, able to easily take down animals such as deer, boars, and cattle. They also eat small animals in order to survive.
Interesting tiger facts:
  • Tigers have amazing camouflage. Their orange and white fur blend in with the environment perfectly. Like zebras and fingerprints, no two tigers have the same patterns on their fur. Plus, their stripes aren't just on their hair. If you shaved a tiger's fur off (don't do it) they would still have their stripes.
  • Most cats dislike water, right. Well, the biggest cat in the jungle is different. Tigers love taking baths and swimming in the water. They only go into neck-deep water, because they don't like getting their eyes wet. They sometimes even swim backwards in order to not get water in their eyes! Thanks to their webbed feet, tigers not only like swimming, they're good at it, too, and can swim for 20 miles on 1 outing!
  • Tigers' saliva are very good at healing their wounds. However, their saliva doesn't heal humans' wounds, and this is the thing that many people don't believe. Many, many tigers have been killed because people used their derivatives in Chinese medicine for about 1000 years. Their has never been any evidence that tigers' derivatives heal others' wounds, though.
  •  Tigers have superhuman- or supertiger- senses. Their most developed sense is hearing, but they have excellent color and binocular vision. They can see 6 times better than a human.Their roars can be heard from 2 miles away. Tigers' canine teeth can grow up to 3 inches. DO NOT STICK YOUR FINGER IN A TIGER'S MOUTH. THEIR POWERFUL TEETH CAN CHOMP THROUGH THE VERTEBRAE OF EVERY LIVING BEING ON EARTH!
  • Tigers can eat up to 30 pounds of food a day, and can go for a few days without any food. They can pull things that would take 15 humans to pull, and may travel miles to go to their favorite haunts.
  • Some tigers are white. However, these tigers are very rare. Only about 1 in 10000 tigers are white!
  • Tiger's can weigh up to 660 pounds! Tiger cubs usually stay with their mothers until they are about 2 years old, but many tigers- about half of them- never live beyond two years of age. :(
  • When tigers mate with lions, they give birth to hybrids called tigons and ligers.
So why are tigers endangered? Many reasons. Places that were once filled with trees have now become cities.Tigers need forests and lots of room to survive, and humans are not giving them what they need. Also because of this, tigers cannot mate with many other tigers, and instead mate with the same group over and over. Over time this weakens tigers and cubs are born with birth defects.
Also, poaching. On the black market, every single piece of tiger is worth alot of money- EVERY SINGLE PIECE. A tiger's coat can be sold for $20000. This is another big reason why tigers are being killed off. There are only about 3000-4000 tigers left in the world. A century ago there was 100000. There are more tigers as pets than there are tigers in the wild.
We have to protect these animals. They are a giant part of our food chain. We CANNOT let them go extinct. Please help. Look at these websites for more info:

Bio #1: Zebra Duiker

Hi!
I am going to be doing a new "series" about endangered animals.Every two weeks I'm going to talk about 5 or so endangered animals. Then I will poll you. Which ones you're favorite? (Even though you like all of them.) Here's the first one:
The First Bio... ZEBRA DUIKER!!!!!!!!!!!

The Zebra Duiker

The zebra duiker is a very interesting creature. It’s like a cross between a zebra, a tiger, an antelope, and a deer. It does have zebra stripes, though not on the head or neck, but instead of a white background coat, it has a tigerlike reddish background coat. They have small antlers like antelopes, they are much smaller than ordinary zebras, and they have a big behind. These cute creatures weigh an average of 30 pounds, the weight of an average-sized dog. They live in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone, and have been seen in Cote d’Ivoire.
The zebra duiker is a species with many problems. It’s so tiny compared to other forest animals, and this is the reason why it has so many predators, including big cats and even birds of prey. Some humans poach these animals for their fur and their meat. The zebra duiker is shown as “threatened” on the US Federal List. This cute animals’ population has decreased 30% in the last 15 years! There are only about 1000-10000 of these animals left in the wild. Please help the zebra duiker.

Hello!
Happy Halloween, even though it's passed already. Because of Sandy not a lot of lights were on so not many people were trick-or-treating; we still got candy. :) Today I'm going to do a violin concert, with a Halloween theme. Every instrumental group has a different costume. I'm a purple skittles (yum!). Wish me luck!

 Merhaba!
Bugun bir keman konseri yapiyorum. Insallah basarili olurum!

For anyone who still thinks global warming is not real, here are 2 recent articles about the science behind climate change:

Here I will be including my Current Events homework, because I wrote about the 2nd link in my own words.

Current Events
By: Yasemin
Scientists are now very certain that climate change made Hurricane Sandy much worse than it would have been. This doesn’t mean that there wouldn’t have been a Sandy if there wasn’t climate change. This means that if there had been no global warming, the sea wouldn’t have risen 13.2 feet- at least 1 foot of that was due to climate change- , and the storm probably wouldn’t have hit us at all.
Temperatures over Greenland were much warmer than usual, which was the reason that the storm actually hit our area. A high-pressure system over Greenland “blocked” the North Atlantic, and pushed the hurricane to the East Coast. The Jet Stream, a stream of wind in the North Atlantic, would typically have pushed the hurricane toward the Atlantic Ocean. If there hadn’t been any climate change, the storm would never have hit us and maybe would have dissipated in the ocean.
The rising sea levels did not help to make the storm any better. As I said earlier, at least 1 foot of the flooding was due to climate change. At least. Plus, the sea surface temperatures off the East Coast. By rising to above-average water vapor, it made more rain, and strengthened the storm.
People should now start understanding that this is a reality. If we don’t do something about climate change, these storms may get worse and worse and worse till they flood coastlines-including NYC- and create chaos and destruction. We cannot let this happen to ourselves. It’s silly to think that we are destroying ourselves, but it’s true. It’s as though the human race is committing a slow suicide. I think we can still do something about this, but there isn’t much time.

It has come to my attention that lots of Turkish people have been looking at my blog. That's why I will now sometimes be translating my blog into Turkish.

Hi! Here are the pictures I've been meaning to put up for a while.

The boardwalk went up just like soggy cardboard!
All the wood and debris from the ocean got washed up on land.
Take a look at the right side of the picture. The boardwalk went way up.
This tree got pulled right out of the ground-roots and all! Lots of other trees here suffered the same fate, or otherwise broke clean in half, as though lightning struck them.
More destruction.

It's going to take a really long time for these places to clean up, and an equal amount of time for NJ to heal.
Hola!
I'm at my grandparents' house. They live literally in the woods. They didn't have electricity or water either until about 10:00 yesterday night. Many trees here have been uprooted-we're talking about giant trees being uprooted, not puny little ones. Last post I talked about how Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, said that this sort of thing would happen more often. More hurricanes, more natural disasters, and he said this would be because of global warming. Is this true or not????
